What Exactly Do I Get For My Money?

We supply either a Chrome plated and lacquered pole or a Brass plated and lacquered pole with two identical brass or chrome fittings - one for the floor, one for the ceiling. The fittings supplied are static, i.e. they hold the pole fixed in place. The pole we normally supply is 2.500mtr long - this should be long enough to fit into most rooms, but other lengths are available - click here for details. What we don't supply are the screws etc. to fix the fittings to your floor and ceiling. This is simply because there are so many possible surfaces (concrete, wood, plaster, etc.) that it would not be practical for us to keep all the different types of fixings - your local DIY centre can do it much better and cheaper than us - and give you advice if you're not sure.

Can I Buy My Pole Cut To The Exact Length I Require?

Unfortunately not. If you take a glance at Metalfast's Home Page you will see that we actually make our living by selling Aluminium Plate and Bar to industry - this means that our equipment is fairly heavy duty. We have tried very hard to use our saws to cut the poles but it is rather like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut -the jaws of the saws are just too big and powerful - the poles always end up badly squashed and scratched!

The poles are extremely easy to cut with just a normal hacksaw so we've decided to offer the poles in a range of 'standard sizes'. You, the customer, can then cut them to the exact required length at home. This offers two distinct advantages; it helps us to keep our costs down which in turn means the selling price, and the poles are cut to length 'in situ', minimizing mistakes with the tape measure!

How Do Install My Pole?

First of all, we strongly recommend that if you are unsure as to your ability to safely install your Pole, get a professional builder, joiner or similar to do it.

Having said that, if you feel confident with a screw driver, the following tips may be helpful;

  • Carefully work out a safe positioning for the pole in your room. Apart from the obvious of making sure there is enough room for you to use the pole, it is extremely important that you make sure that the fittings can be attached to something strong enough to take your weight. The pole fittings should be screwed to wooden floor or ceiling joists, or to solid concrete floors and ceiling.  You should never attach to a "normal" plasterboard ceiling, unless there is a wooden joist or noggin behind it, that you can screw into.
  • Because there are many different types of floors and ceilings, we do not provide screws or wallplugs with our poles. Once you have worked out what your pole is going to be attached to, we recommend a visit to your local DIY store to get advice on the best type and length of fittings screws or "wallplugs" to use.
  • Cut the pole to the required length. An everyday hacksaw or similar should be all that is required. Ensure the Pole is left long enough to fit all the way into the fittings on the floor and ceiling.
  • Slide the ceiling fitting onto the Pole and erect. Use a spirit level to make sure the pole is vertical before you attach the fitting to the ceiling. Again we warn you that the ceiling fitting needs to be attached to something strong - we don't recommend fixing it to just a plaster ceiling, instead use screws long enough to go through the ceiling into a ceiling joist or noggin (a piece of wood fixed between two ceiling joists).
  • Remember, the most important thing is your safety. Make sure the pole is fixed securely enough ( sorry to keep repeating ourselves), and if you are in any doubt - get a professional.

I Don't Want To Install The Pole Myself, Who Should I Call?

Generally speaking, a carpenter or general builder is a good bet - check the Yellow Pages.

How do I know that my Pole is strong enough?

To be sure, we installed a pole in our own warehouse and persuaded George -one of our warehouse managers - and who's a suitably big and strong man, to 'dance' on it!  If the Poles can take this sort of abuse, we're sure they're strong enough!

Can I Take My Pole Down Easily?

We don't see why not. The fittings each have three screw holes, and to remove the Pole you only need to unscrew either the floor or the ceiling fitting and the Pole can be taken down. The other fitting can be left in place if you wish.

What if my Pole arrives damaged?

It is important to us that our customers are satisfied - in fact, we have built our reputation on it, so we will always try to resolve a problem quickly and efficiently.

When the Pole is delivered you will be asked to sign for it 'received in good condition'. Please take a moment to check the Pole and fittings - if they are damaged, either send them back or sign for it 'damaged', then contact us and we will replace it as quickly as possible. If it is signed for 'in good condition' and later found to be damaged, it makes the whole process a little more difficult, so please try and check it before signing.

If you have any other problems or questions, we are always here to help.
